The Benefits of Facial Gua Sha

The Benefits of Gua Sha

Have you ever spent several hours working on your laptop only to suddenly realize your hands feel achy and a little cramped? Or, driven a long distance, and arrived at your destination needing a good massage and some kind of umbrella cocktail?

In both cases, a relaxing massage would do both your body and your mind a lot of good. Holding tension in one part of the body creates a constriction of blood flow and oxygen that affects you holistically.  When you massage affected areas, you’re not only repairing damaged muscles, you’re also encouraging surrounding muscles to loosen and relax, thus relieving muscle tightness and tension.

Facial Gua sha is kind of like yoga for your face; it works areas of tension in your face and neck, thereby improving circulation, reducing pain, and increasing physical and mental relaxation.

If you’re interested in discovering the full array of benefits of facial Gua sha, read on!

We’re going to discuss the history of Gua sha, the benefits of facial Gua sha, and rose quartz Gua sha benefits.

The History of Facial Gua Sha

the history of gua sha

The roots of this practice date back to the Paleolithic age. At its conception, people used simple stone tools to activate a beautifully complex scientific process.

As noted above, we’ve all had the experience of massaging stiff or painful areas in our bodies as a means of releasing tension, and restoring our muscles and skin back to a healthy balance.

Gua sha is the practice of using a stone to scrape across the skin to release areas of tension. While this practice began over 2 million years ago, the Chinese coined the phrase and modernized the practice during the Ming Dynasty, between 1368 and 1644.

The term “Gua sha” is made up of two Chinese words meaning scrape (gua) and sand (sha). The term denotes the appearance of the tiny blood spots that can temporarily appear under the skin during a facial Gua sha. These temporary blood spots, or petechiae, look like pebbles of sand under the skin, and can be avoided by applying less pressure to the skin and by using a rose quartz stone.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, Gua sha creates friction to help clear “internal” heat and stagnation. When you create friction under your facial skin, you’re activating circulation.

As we know from both ancient and modern medicine, good circulation promotes good health.

The Benefits of Facial Gua Sha

Facial Gua sha offers many benefits for your body and mind.

Physically speaking, Gua sha relieves tension, detoxifies, and produces glowing skin. Since we’ve already covered the ways in which this practice releases tension, let’s discuss the benefits of facial Gua sha to detoxify and beautify.

Facial Gua sha detoxifies by encouraging lymphatic drainage.

This drainage refers to the movement of built-up fluid in the body, which helps remove toxins. The sweeping directional movement of the Gua sha tool, along with applied pressure, gently releases lymphatic drainage, which reduces puffiness and leaves your skin with a natural glow.

Facial Gua sha improves your skin’s appearance.

As you improve lymphatic drainage, you restore healthy circulation. Greater circulation means less waste hanging around under the surface. As that waste loosens, it leaves more space for proper blood flow and increased levels of oxygen throughout the body.

The beautifying result of this lymphatic drainage and increased circulation is reduced facial lines, skin that appears to be lifted and firmed with a more even tone.
